SELECTION CRITERIA

ALL ABOUT NJHS

The National Junior Honor Society is a national service organization.  Students are invited to join based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service and character.  The students take part in numerous service projects such as raising funds for local and national projects, supporting our school-wide endeavors, assisting staff at our school, and community volunteering. Additionally, our largest effort is the Salvation Army toy drive. This is a yearly project to collect and deliver toys to children through the Salvation Army of Norristown.

If 6th or 7th grade students have made distinguished Honor Roll for the first 3 marking periods of the school year, their names are submitted as possible candidates.   Since selection is not based solely on scholarship, students are notified of their candidacy and are asked to supply additional information which supports their leadership, citizenship, service and character.   Faculty members are notified of student candidates and they too are asked to supply information about leadership, citizenship, service and character.  Once all the information is collected the members of the Faculty Council review the data (application, essay, behaviors/discipline) and create the list of students selected for membership.  Their decision is final.

Selection of new members will be made in May.  As you begin the new school year, remember the characteristics which form the basis of the selection process:

scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service and character

The Viking Values, which are stressed at the Middle School, are part of these criteria.   Those students who demonstrate these traits will not receive an invitation to join the National Junior Honor Society.
